Does Round-Up cause ALL the diseases? A paper [PDF] finds that Glyphosate, the active ingredient in Round-Up, leaves residues in our food that harms gut bacteria, leading to:
"most of the diseases and conditions associated with a Western diet, which include gastrointestinal disorders, obesity, diabetes, heart disease, depression, autism, infertility, cancer, and Alzheimer's disease."
After a "search of the literature", they add on liver diseases and cancer. They also blame it for the frogocide. The proposed mechanism is that Round-up disrupts the shikimate pathway in gut bacteria leading to "gut dysbiosis, impaired sulfate transport, and suppression of the activity of the various members of the cytochrome P450 (CYP) family of enzymes."
It looks like a well-written hypothesis rather than a study. It is essentially a review of other studies that lend support to the authors' hypothesis. The lead researcher is a musician with a broken website and the second researcher is a computer programmer, but that doesn't mean they are wrong. They certainly know more about biology than me, and the paper cites nearly 300 other papers.
Via crabel at Slashdot, we have "a little ad hominem": one of the authors previously used a similar technique to blame the mercury in vaccines for autism. And after googling the other author, I find that my "musician with a broken website" does have a science background although not specializing in biology. I would like to see what happens when an expert in the subject gets their hands on this paper.
