Here is the latest OS and hostname survey based off the links on my links page. Quick thoughts:

  • Linux is crushing everything else. Windows, Solaris, and FreeBSD have all taken nose-dives. It is not even a competition anymore.
  • Many sites that were on Windows 2003 have not bothered to upgrade to 2008.
  • Many web servers are now behind load balancers and cacheing servers, making it difficult to detect the OS of the backend server. This explains why the survey detected a higher number of IIS web servers than Windows operating systems.
  • The links page has not been updated since 2005, so the results may be different after I clean out missing sites and domain-squatted URLs.
  • Netcraft learned to block bots. My plan always was to do the OS fingerprinting in a way that did not abuse a public service, but Netcraft's results are superior to what I could get from nmap.
  • My scripts were buggy as hell and I could see why I abandoned the project. I had to fix up a lot by hand and I still have a big list of newly documented bugs for the next time I try to do this.
