Remember how it was big news that Rachid Ghannouchi's Tunisia banned the movie Persepolis?

The public school system of Chicago, Illinois banned the graphic novel that the movie was based on. This story is developing, in that school system officials are already backtracking off their previous order to remove the book from high schools and libraries. Among the city's arguments:

  • They say they never intended the book to be banned from high schools and school libraries, but at least one high school principal begs to differ.
  • They claim that "powerful images of torture" make the book inappropriate for seventh grade, even though these images are negatively portrayed and most students are themselves drawing powerful images of torture by fourth grade.
  • They say a "curricular determination" needs to be made, but according to the ALA, the book is already part of the city's 7th Grade Common Core Curriculum.

So... wtf?
